Durham was run by Bish­ops early on. They have the pow­ers to run their own par­lia­ment, admin­is­trates their own law and they have also army of their own. In the nine­teenth cen­tury, the pow­ers of the bish­ops were taken away by the Great reform act pre­sented in 1832.
